Residence card in Poland: where to start

What a residence card is, which bases may apply and which documents to prepare for an initial review.

A residence card is a document confirming that a foreigner has been granted a residence permit in Poland. The card itself is not the "permission" — it is its physical proof. First you obtain the permit (a decision), and the card is issued on that basis.

The most important first step is to establish the basis for your stay: work, studies, family ties or business activity. The basis determines the type of permit, the document set and the formal conditions you must meet.

Types of permits

Temporary residence — granted for a specific purpose, usually up to 3 years, with the option of further applications.

Permanent residence and EU long-term resident status — for people who meet the conditions of a longer, uninterrupted stay and additional criteria.

Choosing the right path depends on your situation — which is why an analysis at the start saves time and reduces the risk of gaps.

Where to start

Establish and document the basis for your stay (e.g. an employment contract, a university certificate, family documents).

Check the deadlines: a temporary residence application is usually filed no later than the last day of your legal stay. Filing on time usually lets you obtain a stamp in your passport.

Assemble the base documents: a valid passport, a completed application, photos, proof of address, insurance and proof of income or funds.

Frequently asked questions

How long does processing take?
It depends on the office, the basis and how complete the documents are. There is no single guaranteed timeline — a complete, correct application helps avoid requests and delays.
Can I work during processing?
It depends on your basis and your right to work. This should be checked individually — do not assume in advance.
Who signs and submits the application?
You do it yourself where the state procedure requires it. We prepare and run the case step by step.

Preliminary qualification is not an administrative decision. The client logs in to the state system, signs and submits the application themselves where the procedure requires it.
