Temporary residence: the basics

5 minD&V Legal Group

When temporary residence may fit and what to check before a consultation.

A temporary residence permit is granted for a specific purpose and a fixed term — usually up to 3 years. When it expires, you file another application if the purpose of your stay still exists.

This is the most common path for people who work, study or reunite with family in Poland.

When temporary residence fits

When you have a specific, documentable purpose: employment, studies, family ties or business activity.

When you plan to stay longer than a visa or visa-free travel allows, and your purpose is long-term in nature.

Formal conditions

Most often you must show: the purpose of your stay, health insurance and a source of income or means of support.

Gaps in these areas are the most common cause of requests to supplement — it is worth closing them before filing.

Frequently asked questions

How long is temporary residence granted for?
For a fixed term, usually up to 3 years, depending on the basis and the office decision.
What if my visa expires soon?
A temporary residence application should usually be filed before the end of your legal stay. Filing on time usually lets you obtain a stamp confirming the legality of your stay during processing.

Preliminary qualification is not an administrative decision. The client logs in to the state system, signs and submits the application themselves where the procedure requires it.
